I might go on stage with pre-programmed melodies, if I have a tool to alter them in some way. When playing "live" with Ypsilon 5 I have a couple of arpeggios pre-programmed in the Nord Modular G2 but then I have the ability to alter the sound, the effects and mute different notes here and there to make it all more interesting. But, since I'm a Pianist I do prefer to use the keyboard and play as much as I can. Don't think that has anything to do with being a "proper musician" or not. What defines a "musician"? Someone being able to play an instrument or someone being able to create a song? If a step-sequencer is your thing and music comes out of it - I'd say you're a proper musician too =)

I too have been working completely inside the PC the last 5 years or so. Using hardware is sometimes a lot of bother - and it takes up space! But it gives a better feeling of accomplishment if you doing something live on a track.. I know you work like a proper musician - I don't even have a MIDI controller at this point - but I wouldn't go on a stage to play entirely preprogrammed music anyway...
And getting positive feedback is what we live on. It's what gives us the energy to go on... but I don't seem to be getting much. It might be because my music is shit. :)
